The reason to buy clothes from Chinese marketplaces is not novelty, it is that you are buying one step from the factory floor. The garment towns around Guangzhou, Humen and Pinghu cut for a large share of the world's mid-market apparel, and thousands of those same workshops run their own listings under no brand at all. The practical result is a price band that runs roughly ¥45 to ¥890 for everything on this list (tees at ¥55, heavyweight hoodies at ¥140 to ¥220, wool-blend coats at ¥400 to ¥700), for construction that would carry a considerably higher price tag anywhere else.

What separates a good listing from a bad one is specificity. Good shops publish a fibre composition in percentages, a fabric weight in gsm, and a measurement table in centimetres for every size they cut. Weak listings publish a mood board. Look for 110 to 140gsm poplin on a summer shirt, 150 to 180gsm on an oxford, 12 to 14oz on denim you want to last, and 340gsm or more on a hoodie. If a listing quotes none of those, the shop is reselling somebody else's stock and cannot tell you what it is made of.

Before ordering, do three things. Measure a garment you already own flat and compare it against the shop's table rather than trusting the size letter, because Chinese sizing runs roughly one to two sizes smaller than European or North American equivalents. Read the sizing reports on the product page, which aggregate what buyers found rather than what the seller claimed. Then, once your purchasing agent receives the parcel, actually look at the QC photos: seam allowance, button attachment and the inside of a collar are all visible, and you can refuse the item at that point.

The most expensive mistake is buying one thing at a time. Freight is billed per kilogram, so the marginal cost of adding a second and third garment to a parcel is small while the fixed handling charge is not. The second mistake is ordering an entire wardrobe from shops you have never used. Build a first order out of four or five pieces from three or four different shops, note which ones arrived as described, and concentrate the next order on those. Delivery is typically 7 to 16 days depending on region once a parcel actually ships.

Before you order

On sizing: assume you are one size larger here than at home, then verify against the table. Womenswear cut in China is often narrow through the shoulder and upper arm even when the bust measurement matches, so check shoulder width specifically. Menswear tends to be short in the sleeve relative to the chest. Anything described as oversized, boxy or dropped-shoulder already includes the extra room in the pattern. Sizing up on top of that gets you a tent. When a product page reports a piece runs small with meaningful review volume behind it, believe the reports over the chart.

For freight, weigh your basket before you commit. A realistic mixed order (two tees, a shirt, a pair of trousers, a hoodie) comes to about 2.4kg, which is roughly ¥100 of line-haul to Western Europe or ¥115 to North America, plus around ¥20 of handling. Combine light and heavy in the same parcel rather than splitting them, and add the cheap small things you keep meaning to buy (socks, a cap, a belt), because they cost almost nothing once the parcel is already moving. Most agents give you between 45 and 180 days of free warehouse storage, which is more than enough time to accumulate a sensible order.

Spend more where fabric is the entire product: knitwear, denim, coats, anything wool. Spend less on tees, shorts and loungewear, where the difference between ¥60 and ¥160 is mostly print and packaging. The honest caveat is that this is not a returns culture. Your leverage is the QC stage in the agent warehouse, and after that you are keeping what arrives. Treat your first parcel as tuition, and expect one piece in five or six to be a miss.

What size should I order from Taobao clothing shops?

As a rule of thumb, order one to two sizes larger than your usual European or North American size, but always confirm against the shop's own measurement table in centimetres. Measure a garment you already own laid flat (chest, body length and shoulder width) and match those numbers. Size letters are not standardised between shops, so the same L can vary by six centimetres in the chest.

How long does clothing take to arrive?

Two clocks run in sequence. Domestic delivery to your purchasing agent's warehouse takes two to five days, then the parcel waits until you submit it for international shipping. Line-haul is typically 7 to 14 days to Western Europe, 8 to 16 days to North America, 4 to 9 days to Asia-Pacific and 14 to 30 days to Latin America. Budget three to five weeks door to door for a first order.

How much does shipping cost for a clothing parcel?

Shipping is charged by weight, at roughly ¥42 per kilogram to Western Europe, ¥48 to North America, ¥30 to Asia-Pacific, ¥52 to Oceania and ¥68 to Latin America, plus a flat handling fee of about ¥18 to ¥26 per parcel. Most purchasing agents charge no percentage service fee on the item subtotal and add only a small per-parcel handling charge of ¥5 to ¥15.

Can I return clothes that do not fit?

Realistically, no, not once the parcel has left China. Your genuine opportunity to reject an item is at the QC stage, when your purchasing agent photographs it in their warehouse and you can request a return to the seller before it is packed. Some sellers accept domestic returns within seven days. After international shipping, resale or alteration is usually the practical option.

Are the fabric weights and compositions in listings accurate?

More often than not, on shops that state specific figures. Listings that quote a precise gsm number and a percentage composition are usually reproducing a real spec sheet, since the same shop sells wholesale to trade buyers who would notice. The accuracy rating and community photos on each product page are the practical cross-check, and they flag the listings that flatter themselves.

How many items should I put in one order?

Five to ten pieces is the efficient range. Freight is billed per kilogram with a fixed handling fee on top, so the cost per garment drops sharply between one item and five, then flattens. Beyond roughly 6kg some routes change tier and pricing shifts again. Ordering across three or four shops in one parcel also lets you test several sellers for the price of one shipment.
